I am dieting.

Yes, I said it.
I need to lose weight.
Like most of us in this country, I guess. I finally am at the point where I can't stand not having any energy and not being able to wear my clothes. None fit right. So...here I am in my 4th week and I have lost 10 pounds now. It has helped that I have a great diet partner...My sister in law! She is right at it with me. I hope to keep it up so that it becomes a habit and a lifestyle. Thank you for supporting me in my endeavor by stopping by and reading this! P.S. The hat I am wearing is from CrazySocks Crochet Shop

Well, today I am going to talk about snow because it seems to have finally come to our neck of the woods. We were having a very easy winter until the past couple days.

We have already had our share...in my book! This picnic table shows quite a bit, but the wind was so crazy yesterday that it really isn't telling the whole truth. The kids are happy, but not the parents. It just means more work for us...back to winter reality...Haha! Time to go clean off the van I guess!

Remember the guy from the movie You've Got Mail? Frank Navasky... He was the one who loved the old typewriters...and didn't really like technology much. I was just thinking of that movie today. I think it is probably my favorite movie. If I don't know what to watch I throw that one in and love every minute of it! Well, anyway...I was thinking that there sometimes are items, that even though we have one or enough...we want more.(like Frank did with the typewriters) Lately for me it has been owls.

I know they are trending right now and that is probably why I like them, but I just think there are some cute ones out there.

I have my own little collection of them going...they have to have a certain whimsical look to them though...I am not into the REAL looking ones.

So I guess they are kind of like potato chips for me...I can't just have one.

I also tried to do a snowflake...still need to tweak this design...the thread I used in this one was very difficult to sew with on such a detailed area...

I was reading a blog post the other day that

really encouraged us to use the 3 Rs (Reduce,

Reuse, and Recycle) in our scrapbooking! This

is the very reason I started making my

appliques the way I do! I was looking for

some fabric flowers online and just decided to

make my own! I am so glad to see that it is

starting to take off!

When making my appliques I do my best to

use fabric scraps or any fabric that may be

heading for the landfills. Like right

now...all of my Skulls and Crossbone appliques are being

made with my old bedskirt. It had been on my bed forever

and had been getting tears in it from getting stepped on. So I

finally pulled it out and realized the part you never see is all

white!! I washed that baby up and have been cutting from it

ever since! I also use old denim jeans that people give me! I

always tell people to give me their old jeans..."Don't throw

them away! I will use them!" Another great source I have

found is other people who sew. They have scraps- I will buy

them! I would rather pay someone for a huge bag of scraps

than have to buy new fabric at the stores. Some have just

been so happy to get rid of them, I just pay for shipping!

I also want to encourage you to use fabric in your

scrapbooking! I just love the look of fabric on

a card or a scrapbook layout! It just adds a

special handmade "something"...And if you

aren't much of a sewer, be sure that

when you buy a HollyCraft applique, I am

doing my best to help the environment!

I am happy to say that the big order for 20 sharks got to my customer in time and am already working on her next order of 20 sharks and 6 dolphins this time!

Over the weekend I got a big order for shark appliques. My husband was kind enough to help me cut them out! Thanks again!

I was able to get them finished up by my own set deadline...Today! I am finally getting better at figuring out how long things will take me. Thank goodness!

I also was able to send out my Etsy orders! And I will be mailing this one out today. I think these are so cute.

Etsy Treasuries...Why Do Them? And How You Can Help!

I recently read a comment in my EtsyGreetings group that helped me to realize why I have been doing treasuries on Etsy for a while now. I want to add it to my blog so that I can look back at it and also help readers to realize what you can do to help out too! Thanks in advance to Laura from PetScribbles for this "tutorial for newbies" if you will. I am not a newbie and I still think it is awesome!

I wanted to mention a few key treasury tips, just for those perhaps
newer to treasuries who might not know this info...
When you're in a treasury, there are several steps you can take to help
the treasury get noticed more. While it is true that Etsy doesn't ever
seem to put a treasury of all one product (i.e. greeting cards) on their
front page, that doesn't matter too much. There are many ways for this
treasury to be seen by potential shoppers anyway.
Think about what the viewer stats could be if each featured seller in
the treasury would:
1) post and share it on their Facebook pages; or hit the "like" Facebook
button right on the treasury page. (Your followers will see this in
their news feeds, might be interested to check it out.
2) tweet about it on Twitter. Again - garner more interest for the
treasury, more views.
3) post it on your blog, if you have one, to show off your card included
among many great choices.
And these last two steps are things you can do right on the treasury page:
4) leave a comment about the treasury (and of course thank the treasury
curator).
5) click on EVERY item featured. Even if you aren't that interested,
although it is always fun to look more closely at what our fellow team
members are creating.
6) click on the "heart" to favorite the treasury. This (the treasury) is
then seen by members of your Etsy Circle. More viewers.
"Hotness" in the Etsy treasuries = popular treasuries receiving lots of
views and clicks and hearts. And the clicks mean how many times someone
clicked thru to one of the items featured.
In conclusion, if everyone in your treasuries - that's 16 Etsy sellers -
did the above steps, the amount of views and clicks has the potential to
be quite large. That moves the treasury up in the Treasury rankings. It
doesn't take long to do at least some of these steps, if you can't do
all of them. Many buyers look at the treasuries for shopping ideas. Yes,
they can use the search box, but some also like to browse the first few
pages, naturally getting sidetracked along the way as they see something
awesome that catches their eye. If we can catch their eyes early on,
that only benefits all of us as a team! Plus, Etsy admin are always
trolling the treasuries for their own ideas of what to include in their
emails too.

The Thing I Dreaded Most -Happened...Well, Almost...

I was hanging out at my brother's house last Friday eve. It was time to head home, so I picked up my stuff and was heading out the door. All of a sudden I was on the ground. I had missed the step and fell. My sewing box went flying(thankfully it was locked shut). I was in shock at first, then just in pain. I knew my wrist was hurting too. All I could think about- being the avid sewer....was," OH NO!.....I broke my sewing hand." I went to the ER in the morning still worrying because it hurt so much....and my hand was swollen. Thank goodness after about 8 x rays there were no broken bones. YAY...but I did sprain the wrist. So I am still healing. Hopefully it will heal quickly. I am able to do some things with my hand, as long as it doesn't require any pulling or lifting. Sewing is still slow. So is cutting. But I was able to finish up my last order...just took a little longer. I am nervous to start my next one due to the fact that there is LOTS of cutting. UGH! My hand is starting to hurt from all this typing now!
I am going to log off for now...give my hand a break! Thanks everyone for listening to me whine. I am doing my best to keep at my work. I will bring what I can with me on our weekend trip and see how it goes. Thanks everyone for your kind patience. I really do love what I do and want to get back at it as quickly as I can. Back at it! I have been back at it for a couple weeks now and am busier than ever! Thanks everyone! It has been great! If you haven't been following me right along, then you don't have a clue what I am talking about, but I just did a Craft Fair. It was not as successful as I would have liked, but I did have some time to make lots to restock my Etsy shop. It was getting pretty bare. But now I am back at custom orders and I have a lot of work to do...YAY!

We have been having a busy summer. That is for sure. I just wanted to give you a few updates. First HollyCraft Originals is now closed to all custom orders until after Sept. 17. If this changes, I will definitely let you know! I am getting ready for a craft show and need some time to make up some things for it. So far I have quite a few appliques cut out and ready to sew!

Welcome to 2011

Can you all believe it is already 2011!? I know it is surprising me how fast the time goes by as I get older. My kids are getting bigger right in front of my eyes. I just want to thank all of you for supporting HollyCraft during 2010. It gave me the desire to really work hard and keep on chugging through! It has also helped my family because I am a happier person when I get to create. I am also able to help my husband take care of our financial needs. I can stay home with my kids. That is what I am really working for. So here is to keeping it all going in 2011!

I am going to continue working on all my regular appliques and try to throw in a few new ones here and there. I have a few things that I am still trying to work out with some of my new items...like the luggage tags, magnets and pins. So stay tuned! Happy Crafting!

Having Fun Creating!

Wow, can you believe this crazy weather we are having..?? Well, here anyway it is November and we can still open our windows and enjoy the outdoors...we have had some snow already, but long gone now. I have been loving it.
I have been finding a lot of new ways to do some advertising. Just getting my name out there. I have joined Etsypreneur...love that new community. I also have been doing a bunch of treasuries on Etsy. Those are actually fun to do. I never really did very many, but have done 3 or 4 in the last week or so. Go for it if you are on Etsy because usually the people you are promoting, have never seen your shop and then they make a treasury with one of your items and there you go...you have just hit several new potential customers. Yay! Anything for free! Well, that is what I say!

If you aren't sure how to do it...here is a good way, or at least my way! :)

First I go through and find something that strikes me...I favorite it.
Pick a theme.
Then find 11- 15 more things that go along with my theme. Heart them...
Open another window.
Now go to your favorites window. Keep it open...
In the other window go to the treasury home page~create a list button is on the right side of the page.
All you have to do now is go back to your favorites,
right click the item's link name, hit copy and then go back to the treasury page and click paste into the box.
You just continue to do this with each item until all the boxes are done...Hit save!

Have fun!

I have also been having fun trying out some new things in my shop lately...a new keychain and a coffee cozy. I also have several new appliques that I have been making. Check it out soon if you haven't seen them!

I know I said I didn't really want to get into doing craft shows, but next month my brother is putting some little tables he is making into a couple of local ones and asked if I would help along with my mom. So needless to say I said, why not? So now I am helping my mom with outfits that she is sewing...mostly pillowcase dresses and skirts with matching tops with my appliques on them...and hair clippies and headbands to match...so I have been busy with that. My mom is sewing like a fiend...so hopefully I can keep up with her! I am staying quite busy now. Thanks to everyone for all your support and I hope that soon I will be able to get some more appliques listed in my Etsy shop...but for now I will be slow on doing that. Don't hesitate to ask if you would like anything because I will put my internet business ahead of what I am doing for the craft show...I just won't be finishing up any of my appliques I have on Facebook for now...or doing anything new. I just wanted to talk about some of the great deals on Etsy I have right now. I am putting up my headbands with my appliques on them for $5.00 and FREE shipping to anywhere in the U.S. So if you have looked at these, please pick them up now before they are gone! I am not sure if I will be selling these again due to the fact that I have only sold two since I put them in my shop. I think they are adorable in your hair...the owl is on an alligator clippie and is detachable ...they fit toddler to adult.

Sorry about the bad shot...but you get the look? Right! So go over and check those out...I am putting them for this price until they are gone!

The other item I wanted to talk about was the cute bag that Sherri won. She picked my natural tote with a robot applique. I think it turned out so cute! You can also buy these bags from me with any applique for $10.00! I think they are perfect for kids car trip bags. I also love them for taking my small sewing projects to go! I don't have any in my shop yet...so these are custom order only. I will probably put one in the shop soon.

So Much So Much!

I have been busy busy these past couple weeks. Finally got my stuff all set up at Tamaras Boutique in Montague, MI. That was a major thing for me, because I really didn't know what I was doing! But at least that is done. This is a picture of what my setup kind of looks like at the store. Of course my shirts, cards and other contents are finished but you get the idea! :)

Just wanted to let you know that from now on I

will put pictures of my appliques up on Facebook, some even before they are finished, a few days before I put them on Etsy. If you are interested in any of them, be sure to comment on the picture or my page to arrange for purchasing the applique(s). This way I will be able to start the ones that you want first and we can also set up a custom listing and save you $.

I am still strictly doing Etsy to sell my stuff, but my niece has asked me to put some of my handmade items in her little boutique, so I decided I would do this, due to the fact that it is affordable! :) It is also fun because I have been trying out new things...like korker bows and headbands and things that I don't really sell on Etsy.I had my hubby and brother make up a crate tower unit to put my stuff in...I hope it will work great...I like it so far. I have been trying to figure out how to stick everything on it.

I was getting excited about a long drive to the Detroit area this weekend, but now I'm not sure this is going to happen because the kids are sick...they are coughing and sneezing, runny noses...fun stuff. We may have to postpone this trip. I always like to take long car rides so I can sew...this is a great time for me to get lots of sewing done...:)

I have been debating on whether or not to put my little creations in a strictly local artist/crafter store that is opening up about 45 min. away in a little touristy town. They want $30 a month for a spot in the store. Another thing I was wondering about is trying to do an arts/crafts fair.
I think I have finally decided after talking with my husband and some other friends and family that I am going to pretty much stick to Etsy.

~I just really like the fact that I can keep my shop online stocked with however much I want.
~I can have as much or as little as I want.
~It is always open.
~People can easily contact me with any custom orders.
~I don't have to pay a monthly fee.

Probably a ton of other positives too...So just know that if you want to get something from HollyCraft...you can get it at my Etsy shop! Probably no place else! :)

A New Week!

My husband has been working 2nd shift the last two weeks. Let me just say I now have empathy for all the families who deal with this shift. I really hate it. Especially the 10 hr. shift. He goes in at 3:40PM and is there until 2AM. He gets home, stays up for about an hour and a half, then gets up at 11:30AM or later sometimes. So he sees our son pretty much never all week. What a drag. Not to mention the fact that I am taking care of the kids all day long and then the only time I have time to do anything for HollyCraft is after the kids go to bed so I am up all night too...so I am getting half the sleep and doing twice the work that I do when he is on 1st shift! Thankfully he is almost done...he only has to do it this one week more and then back to 1st.

I have been doing lots of creating this past week. Here are the new shirts I did custom for a fellow Michigander!
I think they turned out really cute...this was my first time attaching my appliques myself and selling them that way. Usually I just sell the applique and you do what you want with them! BUSY, BUSY

Wow! That was a busy week...it has finally come to an end...YAY! I finally got some time yesterday to sit down and start sewing some things that I had been putting together. (mostly in my mind) I do this all the time...I will be thinking of things and then when I finally get to sit down and do everything, it is sometimes overwhelming because I have so many ideas that I want to start creating...but when I do get going then I can't stop...just want to keep working! I will share a few of the cute little things I was working on...you may have already seen them on my Facebook Page or in my Etsy shop...but here they are anyway. I have a frog...
I put it on a onesie, but I will probably be doing it as just an applique. I don't really want to get real far into making them and putting them on things...I really just enjoy making the fun little appliques of my owls and such. I figure I will do a few of those types of things for people who just aren't crafty but really like my designs. But mostly I will do the appliques and then you put them on whatever you want to!

I also finished a cute little monkey applique that I just love.... Don't you just love him? I was asked on Facebook if I could put a bow on it...so I may add another of these ones with a cute little bow. Then I will have a boy and a girl. I posted this on my Facebook page for HollyCraft, but I thought if anyone wanted to help me out here they could...

I have the opportunity to set up a spot in a store that is opening up...does anyone have any ideas on how I should set it up...I have never really even done a craft show or anything with my little appliques...so I don't really know what to do. I was thinking of making a few items with them...like put them on clippies,... headbands, onesies and I have my cards...HMM? What do you think? Any advice or comments would help.

I thought I would post this tonight to let everyone know that I will do custom orders to the best of my ability...Just ask...:) My next big order just came in for a 15 inch tree...this will be my biggest yet...I will start work on it first thing tomorrow. Should be fun...It is 3x the normal size of my tree appliques.
My brother is leaving his little guy with our Mom tomorrow so I have a full day to work on my stuff for HollyCraft on Etsy. I will be posting lots of new appliques! I will be able to get lots done with the kids at Grandma's!
I also just found out I will be featured on Our Knickknacks in their featured fan segment next week Tuesday and then Friday! Hopefully this will bring in some extra exposure! It is an easy sign up...go check it out.

I have so many new things to work on this week...I need to do more owls, squirrels, dinosaurs, cupcakes, ice cream cones, trees,flowers...the list is endless I think. I found a new place to try to sell my handmade items today. It is called Craft Is Art. I am not sure how well it is known yet, but it was free to start. They just take a percentage if you sell something. I guess if it gets well known then I may stick with this site...then I don't have to pay the fees that Etsy has. It's Graduation Season...

The EtsyGreetings sale is tomorrow, so I figured I had better make a few new cards. I decided because graduations are going to begin soon I would do some of my owls with a little graduation cap on! I think they turned out cute if I can say so myself! :) I have made them customizable. You can change the color of the cap to fit your school if you like...or just take it as is. I can also change them to fit boy or girl by adding flowers or taking them away. Whatever you like.

As you can see by my picture added, I also ended up getting a new camera. It was on clearance at WalMart...so I decided I would get it for a back up...who knows when my other camera will be fixed! I also finished the baby shower invitations and sent those out yesterday! I hope they get to the customer safe and sound!!

Bummer!! My Camera Broke!

Today I found my camera on the floor next to my craft table. I just had this gut feeling it was broke before I even picked it up. So now I have to send it out to have it fixed. I like my camera...it took me a while to find one that I really liked. It's an Olympus with a lens that comes out. That is the part that broke. It keeps saying zoom error. Unfortunately I use that camera for my pictures on Etsy. It will be a couple weeks before I get it back. UGH!

In the process of making all my invitations for a custom order. I am doing 22 of them. 24 in case of mistakes. It is taking me awhile with all the details. I had to thread all my buttons. There were 96! I had to cut out 96 fabric leaves, 24 branches, 96 small wings for my owls, 48 owls, 24 background papers, 24 cards. Then I had to glue everything down...I'm still in the middle of doing this. So far so good!

It has been the worst week for mailing with the USPS I have had since I started HollyCraft...one package lost in the mail and one package with a damaged product...bummer. So now I have to redo one order, then mail it out again and pray it gets there this time...and then with the damaged item I decided to mail the customer a new button with some of my thread so she could do some first aid repair. Poor little owl had only one eye when she received him...the other had broke right down the middle...

Wow it is taking awhile to get 600 fans...was at 599 then went down to 597, now back at 599...we will have that contest soon...:) Happy Crafting everyone!

What a busy week here at HollyCraft! My biggest order yet of 22 invites for a baby shower! And now my house has become a daycare/craft room! I am taking care of my brother's son for a couple weeks during the days and we just got a new kitten! Aaaahhhh! Call me crazy! (because I will be soon) Happy Crafting to all!!!
